Sustainability Efforts
What is Sustainability?
Sustainable practices support ecological, human, social and economic vitality for both our campus and the global community. Sustainable actions meet present needs while enhancing the environment and the ability of future generations to thrive.
What We're Doing ...
Materiel Management is committed to improving our own practices, as well as providing guidance to other departments, in order to improve sustainability on our campus.
The Bargain Barn and Salvage Operations administers a recycling and disposal program to ensure that all campus electronic waste is recycled or disposed in a safe and compliant manner consistent with the
California Electronic Waste Recycling Act of 2003 and state legislation SB20/50 and SB20.
The Bargain Barn also provides for reuse of excess property by campus departments, rather than having these items disposed of.
Through the
Strategic Sourcing Program, sustainability requirements are included in each university-wide Request For Proposal (RFP).
What You Can Do ...
Environmentally Preferable Purchasing (EPP) is an important step toward making sustainability a reality on our campus. EPP is a strategy that seeks to procure products and services with a reduced or minimal environmental impact as compared to other similar products/services that serve the same purpose.
EPP considerations include:
- reduction of energy consumption, toxicity, air and water pollution impact
- materials efficiency (such as packaging)
- minimizing disposal impact at the end of useful life
